If you live inside the Town of Leesburg, the town will vacuum up loose leaves from the curb each fall at no extra charge. It’s a useful service, but it only handles the last step. Someone still has to get every leaf from the lawn, the beds and the backyard out to the street. This guide explains how the town’s collection works, where it stops, and when it makes sense to bring in a crew.
How Leesburg’s Bulk Leaf Collection Works
The Town of Leesburg’s Street Maintenance Division runs a seasonal bulk leaf collection for loose leaves raked to the curb. A vacuum truck works through town streets and collects the piles. You don’t need to bag anything.
The town says the service begins in October each year. In past seasons it has started in mid-October and run through late December, with crews aiming to reach each street about once a week. Heavy leaf fall or bad weather can stretch that out.
For the current schedule or to report a missed pile, the town lists its leaf collection information here, and the Street Maintenance Division can be reached at 703-737-7073.
Who Gets the Service
Bulk leaf collection is for homes and businesses inside the Leesburg town limits that receive the town’s curbside trash and recycling service. A Leesburg mailing address doesn’t always mean you’re inside town limits. Many neighborhoods with a Leesburg address are in unincorporated Loudoun County and aren’t covered.
If you’re outside town limits, check with your HOA or trash hauler to see what they accept.
How to Set Out Your Leaves
In past seasons the town has asked residents to follow these rules, and piles that don’t meet them may be skipped:
- Rake loose leaves to within about 4 feet of the curb. On streets without a curb, pile them along the front property line near the street.
- Keep piles away from storm drains, fire hydrants and utility boxes.
- Keep parked cars at least 4 feet from the pile, and never park on top of one.
- Leaves only. Don’t mix in grass clippings, brush, branches or trash.
- Keep toys and equipment out of the pile.
After the final pickup of the season, leaves have to go out in yard waste cans or paper yard waste bags instead.
What the Town’s Collection Doesn’t Do
- It doesn’t come onto your property. Crews collect what’s at the curb. Getting leaves out of the backyard, the beds and the fence lines is up to you.
- It doesn’t run on your schedule. A pile can sit for a week or more, and wind and rain will spread it back across the lawn and into the street.
- It doesn’t take mixed debris. Branches and storm debris go out separately as brush.
- It ends in winter. Oaks often hold leaves into December, so late droppers can miss the last pass.
When It Makes Sense to Hire a Crew
Plenty of Leesburg homeowners rake to the curb and let the town do the rest. A leaf removal service is worth a call when:
- You have mature oaks or maples and the volume is more than a weekend of raking.
- Most of the leaves are in a fenced backyard, a long way from the curb.
- You’re outside town limits and there’s no curbside collection.
- You have a business, rental or HOA property that needs to look clean on a set date.
- You seeded the lawn this fall and can’t leave wet leaves sitting on new grass.
- You’d simply rather spend the weekend doing something else.
Our crews clear the lawn, beds, walkways, curb strip and fence lines, and we haul the leaves away, so nothing is left waiting at the street. You can book a single cleanup or several visits through the season. Here’s what our leaf removal service includes.
If the yard also needs branches cleared, beds cut back or shrubs trimmed before winter, that’s a bigger job. See what a full fall cleanup covers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Leesburg pick up leaves for free?
For properties inside town limits that get town curbside trash service, loose leaves raked to the curb are collected each fall as part of town services.
Do I have to bag my leaves in Leesburg?
Not during the bulk leaf collection season. Loose piles at the curb are vacuumed up. Outside that season, leaves go in yard waste cans or paper yard waste bags.
What if the town misses my leaf pile?
First check that the pile meets the town’s rules, then report it to the Street Maintenance Division through the town website or at 703-737-7073.
I have a Leesburg address but no town leaf pickup. Why?
You’re likely outside the town limits, in unincorporated Loudoun County. Your HOA or trash hauler sets the rules there, and a private leaf removal service is the simplest option.
