How deep should mulch be?

Mulch should also be kept pulled back a few inches from tree trunks and shrub stems; the “volcano” mounds you sometimes see around trees trap moisture against the bark and can cause rot. If your beds already have a thick layer, a light top-up or redistribution may be all they need.
